Tiny AI on Your Phone: No Cloud Needed?
THU, 19 MAR 2026
Breaking this morning: A company called Multiverse Computing is shaking things up by making AI models super small. You know how most AI, like ChatGPT, needs to connect to huge data centers in the cloud? Well, Multiverse is figuring out how to shrink these powerful AI brains so they can run right on your own device, like your phone or laptop.
They’ve just launched an app called CompactifAI that uses one of these tiny AI models (named Gilda) which can work offline! They also released a way for other developers to use these small models in their own apps. This is a big deal because right now, many companies are worried about the cost and reliability of relying on massive cloud services for AI. Making AI smaller means you don't need all that external infrastructure. It saves money, offers more privacy because your data stays on your device, and could let AI work in places with no internet, like on drones or satellites. While the app is still getting started and works best on newer devices, the main goal is to help businesses use AI in completely new ways.
Why should you care? Imagine an AI assistant that truly keeps your conversations private because everything happens right on your phone, no internet needed. Or think about AI powering smart tools in remote locations, making decisions instantly without lag. This push for "AI on the edge" could make AI more accessible, cheaper to run, and much more secure, giving us more control over how we use this powerful technology.
What do you think about having AI that runs entirely on your device? Could you see yourself using an offline AI assistant?
