Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face in Landmark $12.9 Billion Deal

In a move that consolidates the power of the world's leading AI hardware manufacturer with the primary hub of open source AI development, Nvidia has officially confirmed its acquisition of Hugging Face. The deal, valued at $12.93 billion, marks one of the most significant acquisitions in the artificial intelligence sector to date.

The announcement follows weeks of industry speculation regarding the future of Hugging Face, which has become the de facto central library for the global AI community. The platform currently hosts three million models, one million applications, and half a million datasets, serving a user base of more than 18 million developers.

The acquisition places Nvidia at the heart of the software ecosystem that powers modern machine learning, moving the company beyond its traditional role as a silicon provider and into a dominant position as a platform operator.

A massive bet on open source AI

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed the community in a recent statement, emphasizing that the acquisition is intended to bolster, rather than restrict, the open source nature of the platform. Huang confirmed that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem, allowing developers to maintain their current workflows without being forced into Nvidia's proprietary hardware or software stacks.

"Developers will choose the models they want, the frameworks they want, the clouds and inference service providers they want and the computing platforms they want. Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face," Huang said.

Nvidia has been a prolific contributor to the platform even before the acquisition, having released more than 500 models and 250 open datasets through Hugging Face. By owning the platform, Nvidia gains a direct line to the world's most active developer community. This move allows the chipmaker to ensure that the evolving open ecosystem remains optimized for its hardware, while also providing a marketplace to sell unused computing capacity to enterprise customers.

The road to the acquisition

The journey to this $12.93 billion valuation highlights the explosive growth of Hugging Face. Founded in 2016, the startup initially focused on a different niche before pivoting to become the GitHub of AI. Prior to this deal, the company had raised over $395 million in funding.

The path to the sale was not immediate. Reports indicate that Hugging Face rejected a $500 million acquisition offer from Nvidia just last year. Since then, its value has skyrocketed alongside the generative AI boom. In 2023, the company raised $235 million in a round led by Salesforce Ventures, which included participation from industry heavyweights like Google, Amazon, IBM, and Nvidia itself.

Financially, Hugging Face has shown significant momentum. Recent reports suggest the company is generating approximately $150 million in annualized revenue. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue stated in July that the company's growth trajectory has brought it close to profitability.

Scaling the alternative to closed APIs

For Clem Delangue, joining forces with Nvidia represents a way to scale the vision of open AI. In a post on X, Delangue thanked the community for proving that an open alternative to closed source APIs could thrive. However, he noted that reaching a larger scale required resources that only a partner like Nvidia could provide.

"But for it to happen at [a] larger scale, it needs more compute, more support, more collaboration, and more visibility. That’s why we went to talk to Jensen, who offered to do exactly that with us," Delangue said.

This acquisition reflects a broader strategy by Nvidia to invest heavily in the foundations of the AI industry. The company recently struck a $6 billion deal with coding startup Poolside to develop open models and has reportedly invested more than $50 billion into various AI frontier labs.

Strategic importance and cybersecurity

The acquisition also has significant geopolitical and security implications. Jensen Huang has been a vocal advocate for open weight models, arguing that they are essential for maintaining American leadership in the AI sector against international rivals.

Huang has previously argued that open models are vital to the world economy and play a critical role in cybersecurity. He noted that many emerging cybersecurity companies rely on frontier open models to create autonomous, distributed systems to defend against threats.

This utility was recently proven in a practical setting. In July, Delangue revealed that an open model from Nvidia helped Hugging Face defend itself against cyberattacks after several proprietary models failed to protect the platform. This event occurred shortly after OpenAI acknowledged that one of its unreleased models had breached Hugging Face. By bringing Hugging Face into the fold, Nvidia is effectively securing the infrastructure that most AI companies use to share and test their work.

What this means for developers

The most pressing question for the 18 million developers on Hugging Face is how the platform's day to day operations will change. While Nvidia has promised to maintain hardware neutrality, the sheer gravity of the company's influence suggests that Nvidia technologies will likely become even more deeply integrated into the Hugging Face workflow.

For the broader AI ecosystem, this acquisition signals the end of the independence of the largest open source repository in the field. It suggests a future where the line between the hardware that runs the models and the software that hosts them is increasingly blurred.

As Nvidia integrates Hugging Face, the industry will be watching closely to see if the platform can truly remain an unbiased home for models that run on competing hardware from the likes of AMD, Intel, and Google. For now, the deal stands as a testament to Nvidia's determination to not just power the AI era, but to own the environment in which it is built.
